The Water-Gate barrier was invented by Daniel Déry on January 1, 1998. An industrial designer by training, Mr. Déry is a visionary, passionate about innovation and industrial creation. The idea came to his mind one New Year’s Day, when he was comfortably installed in his living room, riveted to his television to watch the retrospective of the events of 1997. Among the events that made headlines that yearwas the flood caused by the overflow of the Red River in Manitoba on April 5, 1997 (one of the largest disasters to occur in Canada). Seeing hundreds of soldiers and civilians fill and stack astronomical quantities of sandbags to block the threatening waters, an instant thought went through his head.

« Why not use long empty plastic bags, linked side by side and topped by a large float? So the water would go into the bags, fill them and stop the flooding by creating a barrier made with water instead of sand. » No need to fill thousands of sandbags! Especially since the energy, resources and time spent on this exercise is far from negligible.
The beginning of creation
Guided by his determination and his desire to create a product that could help thousands of people, Daniel Déry produced his first prototype himself, the same day. At that time, he designed a makeshift model in the kitchen sink. The numerous tests carried out were conclusive enough to continue the creation.
The product took shape quickly, and given the scale of the project, Daniel Déry decided to devote himself entirely to this new challenge, his objective being to manufacture water barriers which would be distributed all over the world in order to tackle one of the biggest planetary plagues, the floods.
He then decided to give a name to his product, which he literally calls « Water-Gate». Water for « water » et Gate pour « barrier ».
During its first eight years of existence, the Water-Gate barrier is manufactured through an external supplier, in this case, Megatex.
The first test carried out in the river is a success in the idea that water stops water, but a failure in its concept of manufacture. These were multiple sleeves that were elongated and stacked on top of each other. As soon as the barrier reached almost full capacity, the water-laden cells would slide between them.
After several trial-and-error attempts and significant improvements to the concept, the Water-Gate barrier becomes fully operational. An official version is then released in September 1998 and marketing is underway. This year marks the start of the commercialization of the Water-Gate barrier.
The colour of the barrier then changes from black to yellow, for the sake of visibility.
Daniel Déry, devoted to his product, performs numerous demonstrations and educates all municipal authorities. The performances of the Water-Gate barrier are acclaimed by all.
2000 to 2005
Through numerous prizes won internationally, the manufacturer of the Water-Gate barrier is sought after from all over the world.
A model of the Water-Gate barrier is on display at the Montreal Science Center where Daniel Déry is among the twenty-six participating Canadian inventors.
A large distribution network takes shape and the Water-Gate barrier is distributed all over the world. Installations are carried out at Tokyo Airport, in China, Malaysia, Finland, Belgium, France, South Korea, Panama, Holland, Mexico, Italy, Singapore, Switzerland, England, Australia, the United States, and in several other countries around the world.
Due to the ever-increasing demand, Daniel Déry launches Industrie Vitex, a subsidiary of MegaSecur, to manufacture the Water-Gate barriers. The name Vitex is thought of with reference to the city of Victoriaville and the textile industry. Vi for Victoriaville, and Tex for textiles.
Industrie Vitex works with Megatex to double the production rate and better serve customers from all over the world.
Industrie Vitex quickly becomes autonomous, and gradually abandonsMegatex in order to facilitate the various manufacturing operations.
With state-of-the-art equipment and processes, Industrie Vitex goes further. It performs the printing, cutting and the manufacturing of theentire barrier process itself.
Always attentive to its customers, the company develops rapid deployment crates as an accessory to the Water-Gate barriers. The crates are used to cover long distances in just a few minutes.
Launch of MegaSecur Europe, official distributor of Water-Gate barriers in Europe and the Middle East.
The Water-Gate barrier is FM Approved certified. Certification is obtained in collaboration with the Association of State Flood Plain Managers (ASPM), the engineering firm of the American army and FM approvals.
MegaSecur and Industrie Vitex join forces and move their premises to a more spacious location better suited to operations. The head office is located in Victoriaville, Canada.
